Schools, the Kids, and Taxes

A few local municipalities are considering changing where they send their children to school. Toms River is suggesting they teach these children and will pay for this by getting money from the state.

The plan:

1. Island Height's current K through six grade school system would be drastically changed.

• K through fifth grade – to Cedar Grove Elementary School in Toms River
• Sixth grade – Toms River Intermediate School East
• Island Heights School – provide state mandated pre-school for a portion of Ocean County

2. Seventh through twelfth grade students from Island Beach, Seaside Heights, and Seaside Park would also be taught in Toms River (switched from Central Regional School District in Berkley). The money for teaching would continue to flow to Central Regional for the five year phase in period. Toms River will pick up the cost by getting money from the state – to the tune of one million dollars per year.

The idea is to consolidate in what is hopefully a sensible way, before the state potentially comes in and forces anyone's hand. It is clear that costs, the burden of maintaining schools in close proximity to one another and the need to bus children longer distances needs will force some change to happen.

It seems interesting that Toms River though loves to be at the forefront of creating great schemes for getting education revenue that help them get money for nothing, i.e. they don't charge their residents but expect others to bear significantly in education costs. They charge Ortley Beach home owners crazy property tax rates. Now they want the state to fund moving students from other areas to their schools, which would then lead to them picking up pay for teaching fees from the school districts they will consolidate with.

Good for Toms River residents that their government is clever. Bad for the rest of the folks that get caught up in their net for more students, and more money.

Out of Bounds

Just over the border from Seaside Heights is Ortley Beach. One of its claims to fame is the Surf Club. The club is packed every Friday and Saturday night in the summer. When its closes and they kick everyone out, there are a lot of very loud and drunk people wandering the streets in what is otherwise a quite little place. In fact if the Surf Club wasn't there, you could be surprised as anything that Ortley is right next to Seaside.
